vi0let & Wolf Cutt – MIRROR

I’m not gonna lie to you, it’s 9:40 in the morning, I’m standing in line for a new pokemon card drop like the nerdy gambling addict I am, and I’m listening to a track that feels somewhere between club ready complextro and the dubstep that sculpted my music taste through middle school. Needless to say, this is not how I expected my morning to go, but when something this hot drops who am I to deprive you of my gushing ramblings about it at the earliest possible moment.

MIRROR is a balance of industrial thumping textures, and aggressive growling synth design. It’s the insane, energy packed concoction of vi0let and the self proclaimed “London EDM wizard” Wolf Cutt, and as someone who until now was only familiar with the dark and experimental pop sounds of the former, this track was a punch of adrenaline I didn’t know I needed. It’s first 5 seconds would have you believe you’re getting into ‘just’ another high quality dance track, but as soon as the verse starts it’s immediately obvious that calling this song ‘just’ anything is a complete disservice to what we’re hearing. From the get go the soundscape layered against vi0let’s smooth and cocky delivery is punchy and volatile with its hit on every beat and constant movement in it’s lead synth. By the time we get the breakdown and build we’ve already been engulfed in the narrative (that essentially boils down to “I’m that bitch”), but the prechorus does this lovely thing where it introduces us to what I can only assume is Harvard’s newest doctorate program, Cuntology™

After our short break to discuss higher education is when MIRROR gets especially spicy though. The drop on this song is caustic and violent in ways akin to the feeling of shattering glass and breaking shit for fun. There’s this moment before it focuses up where the instrumental is nothing but distorted vocals and the shifting growl of the bass and the rawness of it is absolutely electric.  If this is Cuntology™ 101 I would like to make this my formal application to the rest of the program, because the concentration of the energy in this song is strong enough to transport me out of this god forsaken pokemon line straight into a bumping, trendy club (but the kind that plays sick awesome music and not stupid ass mid music. God I wish there were good clubs near me…).

vi0let’s I DON’T WANNA FISH has been on my list of things I want to retroactively cover for a while, but for once I’d say my overly packed schedule and procrastination has paid off, because this track is exactly what the kind of energy I want to bring to AuraLink. While we tend to be more of a niche post-hyperpop blog our rules aren’t hard and fast, and it would be dare I say criminal NOT to show you something of this tier from 2 small artist putting out absolutely phenomenal work. If nothing else, if this isn’t the type of music you usually listen to take it as an opportunity to expose yourself to new things. As a general rule I tend to say I’ve outgrown my EDM phase but obviously I’m not above exceptions, and I would dare to say neither are you. In short, go checkout MIRROR, because it very well could replace your coffee this week.
