gottsy – sazerac

I write this message from inside my cozy little cave in the woods. It’s cold and damp, but it’s got good bones, a well stocked bar (a handful of half empty bottles sitting on a large rock), and great atmosphere. My only complain about my humble abode is that in the night I hear the rustling in the woods of one particular red haired Y2k club aesthetic’d forest creature downing shots and causing a ruckus

Well, all of that is obviously a lie. I am writing this in a large open common area on a college campus, but I’ve become fixated on the vibes of the new gottsy release, in conjunction with her Spotify bio “find me at the club find me in the forest”, so you get a vividly nonsensical intro from me today. sazerac is a song with vibes I can describe as nothing other than mean and intimidating, yet boundlessly interesting. It’s in a way that’s not dissimilar to having a crush on the scary popular girl as despite the foreboding feel, the dark warmth of the bass paired with the simple trap drums and vocal chopped background effects draws you in for more damn well knowing that whatever coming is going to be mean. It’s a soundscape derived from traditional trap and purposefully distilled to something sharp that morphs with purpose. It’s chorus is methodically indifferent in it’s vocal delivery, the verses are pointed with quick rhythms and runs in typical gottsy fashion, and in it it’s final moments it builds anthemic scale with it’s thick analog synths playing fifths. That last part is a mandatory mention from me, as I adore the way this song conducts it’s final moment. Thickening itself with chords contrasted with the massively reverbed vocals from the pre-chorus creates this phenomenal climactic moment before echoing off into silence, leaving us all hanging for whatever is next to come in our overly bloated playlist. To keep it simple, it’s a masterful end to a top tier piece of work.

I’m not going to lie, I had to look up what a sazerac was before writing this. I’ve never actually heard of them let alone been offered one, but I can form an assumption based off what I’m hearing exactly what I would be in for. Given that the Sazerac company produces mainly rye whiskey, and the cocktail bearing it’s name contains absinthe, it’s gonna burn you bad. It’s a great metaphor that matches the energy of this track. When I saw a new gottsy release on our weekly report of new songs I got incredibly excited, knowing we were in for something full of top tier sound design and unparalleled energy, and once again I’ve been proven right. With the sheer quality per track of her currently small catalog, I’m nothing if not ecstatic to see what a prospective debut album would sound like, but lets not get ahead of ourselves. For now let’s sit back, pour a drink, and enjoy the ride within every single.
